To improve changeover performance of a company, understanding the interaction between manufacturing system design and changeover operations is critical. Rapid changeover on a manufacturing line is key pre-requisite for increased flexibility, lead time reduction and responsive manufacture. Existing approaches lack capturing the impact of low-level design decision on the overall performance of changeover operation. This thesis presents a functional model encompassing all the changeover-related aspects developed by considering the principles of system engineering. This designed framework satisfied four objectives: to clearly define and separate improvement objectives from the means of achievement, to present the impact of various decisions on the achievement of the objectives, to provide common platform to effectively communicate this information across the organization and to provide a framework that integrates existing tools.Together with additional tools derived from Collective System Design methodology (CSD), changeover framework is meant to upgrade the methodology itself with a decisive aspect not yet considered in detail. |
