Applying OMA device management to a PC application

Abstract

Matkapuhelimiin sisältyvien ominaisuuksien määrä on kasvanut viime aikoina ja niiden hallinta on tullut yhä hankalammaksi. Ongelma on päässyt syntymään muutamia vuosia sitten, kun lisäpaveluiden ja puhelinten ominaisuuksien määrät kasvoivat suuresti. Ratkaisuja on luotu kapealla sektorilla valmistajakohtaisesti, mutta yhtä ja yhteistä ratkaisua ei ole vielä löytynyt. Tätä aukkoa yrittää nyt täyttää kohdeyrityksen kehittämä teknologia, laitteenhallinta. Diplomityössä tutkittiin yrityksen laitehallintaratkaisun toteuttamista määritellyssä ohjelmistossa, jotta lähiyhteyden kautta olisi mahdollista hallita matkapuhelimia helpommin kuin laitteen käyttöliittymästä. Työn tulokset toimivat myös esiselvityksenä laitehallintaominaisuuden suunnittelu- ja toteutusvaiheille. Toteutuksen pohjana käytettiin määritellyn ohjelmiston nykyistä versiota, johon uuden laitteenhallintatavan tuomat muutokset tehtiin lähinnä käyttöliittymään ja arkkitehtuurin keskikerroksiin. Tutkimuksen edetessä tuli ilmi varsin selvästi, että globaalin geneerisen ratkaisun ottaminen käyttöön mahdollisimman nopeasti vähentää pitkällä tähtäimellä työn määrää ja helpottaa ylläpidon osuutta huomattavasti. /Kir10

The number of features in mobile phones has increased enormously lately and managing them has become even more difficult. The problem was born a few years ago, when the number of third party services and phone features increased greatly. Solutions have been made on a narrow sector proprietary to a manufacturer, but no one and only common solution has been found yet. Technology called device management developed by the Company is an attempt to fill the gap. In the thesis the implementation of the Company solution in the Company software was studied so that it would be easier to manage mobile phones via local connection than from the user interface of the device. The results of the thesis are also acting as a clarification for the design and implementation phases of the device management feature. The current version of the Company was used as a basis for the implementation. The changes brought by the new way of managing devices are mainly made to the user interface and to the middle layers of the architecture. During the study it became quite obvious that taking a global generic solution into use as quickly as possible will decrease the amount of work in the long run and make the maintenance much easier.
