Data services in third generation mobile telecommunications systems

Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to find out the requirements for new data services and their effects on the third generation mobile telecommunications systems. This thesis focuses on the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), which is being standardised by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).Services aimed to be supported by UMTS are presented and classified according to their characteristics. Video based services and Internet are studied carefully, because they are likely to play a major role in the UMTS service concept. The results of this study show that services accessed via Internet and video based services have very different requirements.This study is based on the research and standardization activities, which are taking place inside the Nokia Group and at the ETSI. /Kir10
