Multi-site planning in steel tube industry

Abstract

The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the multi-site operations of the case company Rautaruukki Metform from the operations planning point of view. The other objectives are divided to two categories, business and internal processes' development ones. The business objectives concentrate on the customer demand management, flexibility, lead times, and throughput of the operations. The internal objectives include analysis and identification of the development needs of the current operations planning processes, and development of a concept for the operations planning processes.- The study starts by analysing the current planning processes and by determining the development needs and potential current operations have. Two different proposals for the future operations planning processes are outlined after that. The idea is to concretise and analyse with these two concepts the development ideas concerning planning processes. The analysis of these concepts is performed from phase to phase basis. Further analyses of customer classification possibilities, supply chain control, order handling needs, and supply chain management tools are performed to support the introduced concepts.- Suggestions concerning appropriate planning processes, accuracies of the different levels of plans, supply chain control principle, customer classification, information system development, and further studies are made based on these analyses.

AB3:Tutkimuksen päätavoitteena on analysoida case-yritys Rautaruukki Metformin monitehdasympäristöä toiminnansuunnittelun näkökulmasta. Muut tutkimuksen tavoitteet on jaettu kahteen pääryhmään, liiketoiminta- ja sisäisien prosessien kehitystavoitteisiin. Liiketoimintatavoitteet keskittyvät asiakaskysynnän hallintaan, joustavuuteen, läpäisyaikoihin ja operaatioiden fyysiseen läpäisyyn. Sisäiset kehitystavoitteet sisältävät nykyisten toimintaprosessien kehitystarpeiden tunnistamisen ja analysoinnin sekä uuden suunnittelukonseptin kehittämisen.- Aluksi tutkimuksessa analysoidaan nykyiset suunnitteluprosessit ja määritetään kehityskohteet sekä arvioidaan niiden kehityspotentiaali. Sen jälkeen hahmotellaan kaksi erilaista suunnittelukonseptia tulevaisuuden tarpeet huomioiden. Suunnittelukonseptien ideana on korkretisoida kehitysideat ja analysoida ne konseptien avulla. Konseptien analysointi etenee prosessinomaisesti suunnitteluvaiheesta toiseen. Näiden tueksi analysoidaan lisäksi asiakasluokittelumahdollisuuksia, jalostusketjun ohjausta, tilaustenkäsittelytarpeita ja jalostusketjun hallintaan tarkoitettuja tietojärjestelmiä.- Analyysien perusteella esitetään lopuksi suosituksia koskien suunnitteluprosesseja, eri tason suunnitelmien tarkkuuksia, jalostusketjun ohjausta, asiakasluokittelua, tietojarjes elmäkehitystä ja jatkotutkimuksia.
