During the last years, the development of transmission technologies has been rapid. The availability of fast data transmission equipment is getting better and the use of broadband networks is increasing. -So far it has been difficult to connect residential subscribers, i.e. , households and small business, to the broadband networks because of the limited access network capabilities. The existing twisted pair and coaxial cables have been unable to offer sufficient data rates. Also the installation of the new cables, like fiber, has been considered to be too expensive.The progress in the transmission technology during the last couple of years has provided the possibility to increase services offered through the existing telephone and cable-TV networks. Nowadays the residential subscriber can be connected to the broadband network with reasonable data rates. -ADSL can be considered to be more suitable for households, since in provides the existing telephone services together with fast data transmission. HDSL needs another subscriber line, which needs to be leased from the local telephone operator. This leads to some extra costs. On the other hand, the price of the existing HDSL equipment is lower and the availability is better than the corresponding ADSL equipment. -The tests described in this thesis clearly show that both ADSL and HDSL can be used for residential broadband access, since they provide acceptable quality of service and they don't interfere with existing systems. Both techniques are also technically suitable for several applications that can be provided for the subscribers. /Kir10 Työssä tarkastellaan ADSL/HDSL-tekniikoiden soveltuvuutta laajakaistaverkonpienliittymiin.
