DX 200 exchange release upgrade process

Abstract

AB3:Kilpailun kiristyessä tietoliikennealalla myös operaattoreiden vaatimukset kasvavat. He vaativat toimittajiltaan yhä parempia palveluja sekä luotettavampia toimituksia. Yksi viidestä toimitustyypistä on julkaisutason nostotoimitus. Julkaisutason nostoprosessin tarkoituksena on päivittää puhelinkeskuksiin uusia palveluja. Jotta voitaisiin paremmin palvella operaattoreita myös toimitusprosesseissa, on ensin selvitettävä mitkä ovat yleisimmät virhetilanteet julkaisutasonnostoprosessissa. Tämän työn tarkoitus oli osaltaan kartoittaa näitä ongelmia. -Perustana julkaisutasonnostoprosessille työssä kuvataan DX 200 tuoteperheen yleisiä ominaisuuksia. Työssä esitetään eri asiakastoimitustyypit ja niiden vuosittainen jakauma. Tämän jälkeen kuvataan julkaisutasonnostoprosessin eri vaiheet ja peilataan havaittuja ongelmia koko prosessiin. -Lopuksi esitellään työkalu SOUP (software update program), joka on kehitetty varmistamaan ja helpottamaan julkaisutasonnostoprosessia. Työkalua voidaan käyttää prosessin loppuvaiheessa, jolloin asiakkaalle toimitetaan uusi ohjelmistopaketti, ja se asennetaan liikenteessä olevaan puhelinkeskukseen. SOUP-työkalun käyttö vähentää prosessissa esiintyviä ongelmia. Lisäksi työkalun tuottama raportti tehdystä työstä antaa mahdollisuuden jälkikäteen tarkastella vaihe vaiheelta julkaisutasonnostoa asiakkaan puhelinkeskuksessa.Julkaisutasonnostoista ja päivityksistä informaatiota on kerätty vasta viime vuoden ajan. Tässä diplomityössä koottiin tiedot päivitysraporteista ja etsittiin perimmäiset syyt ongelmatilanteille toimituksissa. Osaltaan työn tarkoituksena oli myös selvittää julkaisutasonnostoprosessin vaiheet nykyään.

Operators' demands grow when the competition in telecommunications sector is increasing. They require more reliabilty than before from their suppliers. This trend has an effect on release upgrades, too. The release upgrade is a process which aims at introducing new services to the switching exchange. In order to minimise the amount of faulty situations and, on the other hand, to improve the service level offered to operators the real problems of the release upgrade process are investigated. The purpose of this thesis was to find out these problems. -First the principles of the DX 200 system are introduced. The different delivery types and the amount of deliveries are presented, too. Then the release upgrade process and its main problems are discussed. -Finally, a tool called SOUP is introduced. The name comes from Software Update Program. It will make the actual upgrade process in customer's premises more assured and automatic. The SOUP-tool generates also a report where all the procedures executed during the installation phase of the release upgrade process are listed. -The idea to collecting the information from release upgrades and updates raised during last year. In this thesis, installation reports were investigated and the aim was to find out which have been the main reasons for problematic situations in release upgrades. Release upgrade process was investigated in order to update the document of the process.
