The utilization of GSM-based messaging in a car terminal

Abstract

GSM-networks provide a versatile way for applications as well as human beings to communicate with each other. Particularly, the Short Message Service, SMS, has excited the service providers and designers to develop different value-added services for the users of GSM-phones. These value-added services can be utilized both in business life and leisure time. Recently, short message have been a base for the development of new telematic services in the traffic environment. In order to serve people better, the service providers, network operators and GSM-terminal vendors have together developed new protocol formats and standards for global usage in the GSM-environment. These standards are the ground for new value- added services offered to the future users. The Smart Messaging- and the Narrowband Sockets-protocol developed by Nokia aim at giving a flexible and global concept for the utilization of services. These concepts take into account the special characteristics and demands of the wireless environment. The future application architecture, the Wireless Application Protocol, developed by Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and Unwired Planet, utilizes different existing protocols, for example from the Internet, and improves them to suite better to the requirements of the future communication.This master's thesis gives an overview of the different GSM-based value-added services and their implementation. Special attention has been paid to the services in the car environment. Also the bearers of the GSM network - SMS point-to-point and SMS cell broadcast. USSD and GPRS- have been studied.
