Abstract: A research project was started at Tampere university of technology in July 1999 to study GPS base band hardware implementation. This thesis presents the research done in the project concerning acquisition, searching of GPS satellites. The purpose of the research was to develop hardware architecture for acquisition that works under the control of a system processor. - The thesis includes estimations of different implementations of the data path. Different versions of matched filters and FFT were proposed and their area and memory requirements estimated. None of the alternatives proved to be clearly superior. An acquisition algorithm proposal was also made to act as a basis forr architecture development. Based on matched filter correlator and the acquisition algorithm, a hardware architecture was designed. In the process, also interface to the system processor was defined.- Before implementation is started, it should be verified that the acquisition algorithm and other aspects of the system are as desired. Then RTL level hardware description language is used to complete the design. At a later stage, improvements can be identified and advanced structures incorporated. /Kir10
