GSM high speed data services for communicators

Abstract

Cellular mobile stations have been in the market already for ten years. Nowadays, people are more and more mobile and the amount of out-of-office workers increases all the time. Communicators are developed to fulfil these kinds of needs. However, the market penetration of the first generation communicator, Nokia Communicator 9000, suffered from the limited data capabilities of the GSM system. -The transferred amount of data compared to traditional speech communication is increasing all the time. Data transfer includes facsimiles and modem connections between computers. In the future, the share of the data transfer will continue the growth. However, the data transfer capabilities of the GSM system are not as good as possible. Currently, the GSM system offers 9.6 kbit/s transfer rate and circuit switched connection mode. -High Speed Data service has been developed to strengthen the leading position of the GSM as a mobile communication system. High Speed Data offers a fast circuit switched data transfer (High Speed Circuit Switched Data, HSCSD) and packet switched connections (General Packet Radio Service, GPRS). HSCSD allows even 64 kbit/s transfer rates over GSM. With GPRS, real packet switched connections can be used. The packet switched connections do not require connection establishment time, which is specific for circuit switched connection mode. -Communications and High Speed Data services will create incredible possibilities for both service provides and communicator users. The purpose of this Thesis was to explore the new services and applications from the viewpoints of product development person and end-user. In addition, this thesis High Speed Data features and requirements compared to existing GSM system in general.

Perinteisiä matkapuhelimia on ollut markkinoilla jo kymmenen vuotta. Tänä päivänä ihmiset matkustavat yhä enemmän ja liikkuvaa etätyötä tekevien osuus kasvaa. Kommunikaattoreita kehitetään juuri tällaisten ihmisten kasvaviin tiedonvälitystarpeisiin. Ensimmäisen sukupolven kommunikaattorin, Nokia Communicator 9000:n, yleistymistä on kuitenkin haitannut GSM järjestelmän heikohkot datasiirto-ominaisuudet. -Puhelinverkoissa datasiirron osuus suhteessa tavallisiin puheluihin on kasvanut jatkuvasti. Datalla tarkoitetaan fakseja ja modeemiyhteyksiä tietokoneiden välillä. Tulevaisuudessa datasiirron osuus tulee yhä edelleen kasvamaan. GSM järjestelmän sopivuus datasiirtoon ei kuitenkaan ole paras mahdollinen; tällä hetkellä GSM tarjoaa ainoastaan 9,6 kilobitin tiedonsiirtonopeuden ja piirikytkentäisen yhteysmuodon. -High Speed Data palvelu on kehitetty vahvistamaan GSM:n vahvaa asemaa johtavana matkapuhelinjärjestelmänä. High Speed Data tarjoaa nopean piirikytkentäisen datasiirron (High Speed Circuit Switched Data, HSCSD) ja pakettiradiojärjestelmän (General Packet Radio Service, GPRS). Nopea piirikytkentäinen datasiirto mahdollistaa jopa 64 kilobitin siirtonopeuden GSM järjestelmää käyttäen. Pakettiradiojärjestelmä antaa käyttöön aidon pakettikytkentäisen yhteyden, jonka etuna on piirikytkentäiselle välitysmuodolle tyypillisen kytkentäajan poistuminen. -Kommunikaattorimatkaviestimet yhdistettynä High Speed Datan tarjoamiin palveluihin tulevat luomaan ennen kokemattomia mahdollisuuksia, niin palvelun tuottajille kuin kommunikaattoreiden käyttäjille. Diplomityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia uusia palveluja ja sovelluksia, niin tuotekehityksen, kuin loppukäyttäjän kannalta.
