Developing sourcing process in emerging markets

Abstract

The thesis was done by assignment appointed by the Company. The research environment was in the strategic sourcing department of the engine parts. The topic was limited to Emerging Market sourcing concentrating mainly on the process of finding new suppliers for category parts. Emerging Market stands for countries with growth potential. China is an example of these countries and it is one of the focus areas of this thesis. Essential part of this research is to map down the sourcing process and look for areas in need for improvement. Concentrated of this thesis was on the process control as it is one of the most important aspects of the process. The theoretical framework of the thesis was established by doing a wide literature research. The areas discussed are supply chain management, producement and sourcing in Emerging Market. It proceeds logically focusing to the topic of the thesis. Present day analysis has been made in the beginning of the practical area to give consistency for the analysis. Mapping down the sourcing process enabled discovering the areas in the need of improvement. Process control was chosen as the focus area and status tool was created. The requirements for the status tool were established by interviewing the persons involved in the sourcing process and gathering information from existing applications. The options gathered from a brainstorming session were compared with the value analysis tool. After the establishment of the status tool it has to be implemented and training material has to be made for its users. The project turned out well compared to the set objectives. The sourcing process was mapped down and problems related to it were detected, accountabilities and responsibilities were settled, status tool was created to follow up the sourcing process, performance indicators were created for the process with the help of the status tool and further development ideas are feasible.

AB3:Diplomityö tehtiin kohdeyrityksen moottorikomponenttien strategiseen ostoon. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kehittää hankintaprosessia kehittyvissä maissa. Työssä keskityttiin alueellisesti Kiinaan, koska kohdeyrityksellä on siellä erillinen osto-organisaatio. Diplomityön oleellinen osa oli hankintaprosessin kartoittaminen sekä ongelmakohtien etsiminen haastattelujen avulla. Työssä päätettiin keskittyä prosessinhallintaan, koska se on keskeisessä asemassa prosessin parantamiseksi. Työn teoreettinen viitekehys muodostettiin laajan kirjallisuustutkimuksen avulla. Teoriaosuus koostui toimitusketjujen hallinnasta, ostosta ja hankinnasta kehittyvistä maista. Se eteni loogisesti syventyen työlle valittuun aiheeseen. Kehityskohteeksi valittiin prosessinhallinnan parantaminen, koska suurin ongelma näytti olevan prosessin sekavuus. Tärkeää oli löytää keino, jolla voidaan indikoida prosessin status sekä listata, miten monta aktiivista prosessia oli käynnissä. Myös dokumenttien saatavuus nähtiin ongelmallisena, koska ei ole olemassa yhteistä tietokantaa, minne projektin aikana luodut dokumentit voitaisiin tallentaa. Tiedon pitäisi olla myös kaikkien osapuolten saatavilla, jotta yhteisestä tietokannasta olisi hyötyä. Diplomityön konkreettisin lopputulos oli statustyökalu hankintaprosessille. Se antaa valmiudet prosessien seuraamiselle ja niiden statuksen indikoimiselle. Se myös loi interaktiivisen työskentely-ympäristön eri osastoille, jotka olivat mukana hankintaprosessissa.
