Abstract:

The rapid growth of the Internet in the last few years and the growth of performance of computers has given rise to a strong interest in carrying voice over the Internet. The Internet is the way forward as a medium for future mobile communications. Therefore, Internet protocol (IP) can be used to carry voice also in wireless terminals. In this work, concept of VoIP, ITU conferencing protocol H.323, and Internet protocols related to carrying voice over Internet are studied. Also problems related to carrying voice over packet based networks, installing, and configuring Linux on Compaq iPAQ H3600 series handheld are studied. The target of this work was to design and implement wireless terminal from handheld and accommodate voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) application to wireless terminal. Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology is used to wireless communication. As a result of this thesis a demonstrator environment was developed which consists handheld, WLAN network, and Linux based server. /Kir10 |
