Utilization of a network interface card in native ATM applications

Abstract

AB3:Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää, pystyvätkö uudet laajakaistaisen ISDNverkon sovellukset hyödyntämään ATM-verkon kapasiteetin nykyisessä palvelinympäristössä. Tutkimusongelma rajattiin tiukasti tutkimuskysymysten asettelulla, jotta saataisiin eroteltua jatkuva-aikaisen tiedon siirron asettamat vaatimukset siirtokapasiteetille, siirtoviiveelle ja ajoitukselle. Työssä tutkittiin ATM-verkon rajapintaa käyttöjärjestelmän osana sekä ATM-verkkokortin ohjelmointirajapintaa. Tutkimus täydennettiin tarkastelemalla toteutettua tilausvideopalvelua, jonka avulla saatiin perusteet tutkimusta varten suoritettuihin mittauksiin sekä niiden analysointiin.

In this study, the ATM network interface of a multipurpose operating system and the native ATM application programming interface were examined in detail. The research was complemented by a case study, which was conducted to justify the measurements and performance analysis. The study revealed that in the operating systems which form the base of the continuous media processing on servers and workstations for years to come, the ATM network interface card cannot be fully exploited. Therefore, the restrictions of multipurpose operating system caused by the CPU scheduling, the process framework, and the I/O subsystem must be taken into consideration as the new B-ISDN services are implemented in the general purpose computer environment.
