Occupational safety and health aspects of corporate social responsibility

Abstract

At the moments, occupational safety and health is seen to be linked to corporate social responsibility mainly through the social aspect of corporate social responsibility, despite the fact that there are other aspects to occupational safety and health as well. The main objective of the study was to explore those different aspects of occupational safety and health, and research how occupational safety and health as a whole fits into the concept and the different aspects of corporate social responsibility. The research was carried out on a global level. The aspects were explored by analysing the different sides of occupational safety and health and corporate social responsibility through literature review and by analyzing eight corporate social responsibility reports. In addition, five international corporations were interviewed in order to discover how the corporations see occupational safety and health as a part of corporate social responsibility, and how they combine and manage occupational safety and health and corporate social responsibility issues on the operational level. In both literature and corporations, various terms and definitions were used when discussing corporate social responsibility. The most agreed elements of corporate social responsibility were its economic, social and environmental aspects. Occupational safety and health can also be divided into the same aspects as corporate social responsibility. As a result, occupational safety and health extends to all the aspects of corporate social responsibility.

AB3:Diplomityö tehtiin osana Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston turvallisuuden johtamisen ja suunnittelun yksikön tutkimusprojektia Globaali näkökulma työturvallisuuteen ja -terveyteen. Diplomityön päätavoitteena oli tutkia työturvallisuuden ja -terveyden sekä yhteiskuntavastuun eri puolia ja sitä, miten työturvallisuus ja -terveys kokonaisuudessaan sijoittuvat yhteiskuntavastuun ja sen eri osien alle. Yhteiskuntavastuun merkitys on koko ajan kasvamassa yrityksissä ja organisaatioissa. Tarkistuslistan avulla analysoitiin kahdeksan kansainvälisen yrityksen yhteiskuntavastuuraportteja. Kirjallisuusselvityksen ja osittain myös yhteiskuntavastuuraporttien perusteella kehitettiin kysymyksiä strukturoituja yrityshaastatteluja varten. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin työturvallisuutta ja -terveyttä sekä yhteiskuntavastuuta kansallisen tason lisäksi myös globaalisti ottaen huomioon yritysten lisäksi myös muut organisaatiot. Tutkimuksesta saatujen tulosten perusteella luotiin malli kuvastamaan sitä, miten työturvallisuus ja -terveys sijoittuvat yhteiskuntavastuun alle. Mallissa otettiin huomioon yhteiskuntavastuun taloudellinen ja sosiaalinen puoli sekä ympäristöpuoli, jotka usein menevät päällekkäin. Myös työturvallisuuden ja -terveyden nähtiin menevän päällekkäin yhteiskuntavastuun kaikkien eri vastuualueiden kanssa.
