Analysis of management reporting practices in a global matrix organization

Abstract

The objective of the research was to analyze the present state of management reporting practices in a global industrial target company. The goal was to find out how well these practices are able to provide information to support decision-making, and what are the needs of management reporting and management accounting information in the future. The scope of the research was the target company reporting, that concerns all the business areas and geographic regions. The execution of the research included a questionnaire, executive interviews, and group works and participant observation. This thesis is divided into two parts: first part is a literature review and second part consists of the empirical research. Empirical part presents the findings from the qualitative research.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli analysoida globaalin teollisuusyrityksen johdon raportointikäytäntöjä. Päämääränä oli selvittää, kuinka hyvin nämä käytännöt pystyvät tuottamaan informaatiota päätöksenteon tueksi tällä hetkellä ja mitkä ovat johdon raportoinnin ja johdon laskentatoimen tarpeet tulevaisuudessa. Tutkimus käsitti kohdeyrityksen konserniraportoinnin, joka kattaa kaikki liiketoiminta-alueet sekä maantieteelliset alueet. Tutkimuksen toteutus sisälsi kyselytutkimuksen, johtotason haastatteluja, ryhmätöitä sekä osallistuvaa havainnointia. Tutkimus jakautuu kahteen osaan: kirjallisuustutkimukseen sekä empiiriseen osaan.
