Abstract: Water distribution management in any water supply consists of many functions: operation and maintenance (O&M) of the network, control of unaccounted-for water (UFW), water quality management, tariff structure to make the system self sustaining, hydraulic model, and organizational structure. This study was aimed at assessing the O&M principles and problems in Kakamega (in western Kenya) water distribution system in view of proposing further action to improve the system operation. The following methods were used in the study: 1. Reviewing available literature in journals, books and publications. 2. Examination of available records in Kakamega water suppluoffices 3. Discussion with Kakamega water supply managementstaff. 4. Observations in the distribution system. 5. Field investigations by measurement of average flow, night flow and pressure in the system and water quality analysis. /Kir11
