Objective of this thesis was to evaluate demand response potential of small loads in a paper mill. Target was to examine the capacity for frequency containment reserves and balancing power market operated by Fingrid. Important aspect of the thesis was extensibility to enable effortlessly identical examination in other similar factories. Identification was performed at single motor level utilizing process knowledge. Lists of motors and frequency converter drives were used as base information. Consumption information of the potential loads was examined with various methods; motors for balancing power market were measured with current clamps and frequency converter driven motors using automation systems. True reserve power for frequency containment reserves was examined using historical information. Capacity for balancing power market was evaluated with bidding mechanism. Revenue estimates were calculated with an earning model provided by Fingrid. It is concluded that the available capacities are sufficient for decent payback period considering the investments needed. Technical solutions to enable aggregated demand response in Jämsänkoski paper mill was evaluated. The thesis proposes few options for the realization which are compared to calculated revenue.
